The programme combines on and off-the-job learning which further your skills and knowledge of the role. There is also the opportunity to rotate around different key areas of the business during the apprenticeship.
You’ll learn the technical elements of the role alongside industry-leading teaching at Sheffield Hallam University (SHU), preparing you for a career at the leading edge of one of Britain’s most exciting industries.
Our programme enables you to ‘earn while you learn’ by working on real sites or projects alongside industry leading teams, while earning a competitive salary and continuing your education.
A dedicated manager will guide you through day-to-day challenges, providing you with the right technical knowledge and regular reviews with your mentor will ensure that you reach your potential. Additionally, Sheffield Hallam University will appoint a Course Leader and Work-Based Learning Coach who will provide on-going support throughout your time on the apprenticeship.
In your first two years you will work towards your ‘Cert HE Professional
Practice in Residential Development and Construction’ and your Level 4 Higher Apprenticeship.
After you’ve successfully completed this, you’ll automatically go onto the ‘BSc (Hons) Professional Practice in Residential Development and Construction’ for completion of our Degree Apprenticeship (Level 6).
You will have the opportunity to apply directly for the Chartered Institute of Builders (CIOB) upon completion of your Degree Apprenticeship (Level 6).
If you are interested in becoming a chartered member of the RICS or CABE following completion of your degree, we can provide support and funding to help you achieve this further accreditation.
A potential career path for an Apprentice in Construction can include many different, exciting roles.
Despite our continued growth, we pride our work environments on reflecting the community feel we inspire in our developments. We understand how important our employees are to the success of our business, which is why we offer a generous benefits package to show our appreciation.
Enjoy 26 days annual leave (plus bank holidays), ability to buy and sell annual leave and two-days of paid volunteering leave.
Discounts on home purchase, gym memberships and chosen brands
We offer an enhanced company pension and annual bonus to give you more for your future.
The recruitment process opens in February with employment to commence any time from September (some apprentices may start earlier if requested and agreed with the division). The study element of the apprenticeship will start in the following January.
You will be asked to take part in a video interview, attend an assessment centre and complete a university application. If you are offered a job, you will complete a series of university eligibility activities, which include an assessment of your current knowledge, skills and behaviour, a functional skills review and a conversation with a Work-Based Learning Coach.
It is not essential that you have experience working in the construction industry. The most important thing you can bring to our business is enthusiasm to learn and grow. You will need to be able to work in a diverse environment, bring skills and attributes from a whole host of backgrounds and also be passionate about customers and people.
You will join the business as a Trainee Assistant Site Manager. Promotion in the role is based on your performance on the job, and so even before you’ve completed your degree, it’s like you’d have progressed into further roles.
During your block week, you will complete activities, lectures and assignments with your peers on the programme from the business. This allows you to share good practice, reflect and draw upon each other’s experiences. Within the block weeks, you will also prepare and deliver presentations. The programme delivery will include a blend of in person studies at Sheffield Hallam University (where you will be put up in hotel accommodation nearby) and online learning.
Within the division you work in, your own personal mentor will support you. The role of the mentor is to conduct quarterly reviews with you and discuss both your progress at university and within your role. Sheffield Hallam University appoint a Course Leader and Work-Based Learning Coach who will work with Barratt Redrow to ensure your progress is tracked and any additional support needs are identified. You can access further support through the university directly or through our Health and Wellbeing offer. Don’t forget, you also have peer support from colleagues, and we will offer you with a buddy when you first join.
The time you require to complete set assignments will be down to you as an individual. There are assignments that need to be completed in your own time. You will need to be self-motivated to undertake wider reading in order to explore what you have learnt during your block weeks in more depth. It’s up to you to set your own study schedule to ensure you are ready to submit your coursework on time.
The course is fully funded, and you will not be required to contribute to the cost of your qualification. As a comparison, if you were to take the traditional route and study for a degree on a full-time university course, the fees would cost you in the region of £27,000.
