What’s on

Hints & Tips

If your application is successful, you’ll be invited to take part in the video interview stage. We’ll give you all the instructions you need at the time, but here’s some hints and tips to get you prepared.

  1. Know your stuff

Just like in the application form, we’ll be exploring your motivation for applying. It is important that you have done your research, and you know what we do here at Barratt. We’ll also be asking you about your past experiences and looking for you to provide examples of ‘what you have done’ rather than ‘what you could do’. Be prepared to give examples using STAR (Situational, Task, Action, Result) framework to evidence your skills in response to the questions asked. Your responses may come from experiences at school/college/university such as project work or sports teams, or from the workplace including within the Armed Forces.

  1. Treat this like a face-to-face interview

Ensure that you dress appropriately and be conscious of your body language. Sit with your back straight and shoulders open. A whopping 55% of communication is non-verbal, and another 38% is conveyed through tone of voice; your words only amount to 7%.

  1. Check for professionalism

Ensure you are in a quiet, well-lit place and not likely to be distracted by any noise. Check that the environment is appropriate and tidy. A plain background is best to make sure the focus is on you. Try to look directly at the camera when giving your response.

  1. Check your tech

Make sure you have adequate Wi-Fi connection and that your webcam/phone camera works. Make sure your laptop, phone or tablet is fully charged and all other programmes on your computer are closed – you want to avoid having unwanted notifications pop up.

  1. Be timely

Once you receive the link, complete the video interview within the allotted timeframe. Give yourself enough time to complete it before it expires. You can complete it any time of the day (or night!). Once you have started the interview, you will have a set amount of time to respond, and you will see a timer on the screen.

  1. Practice

Consider doing a trial run with a friend or family member; as if it’s the real thing. This will help you become more comfortable with the process, practice responding to questions with a time limit, and give you the opportunity to see what your background looks like on a screen.

TOP TIP!

Enthusiasm & confidence – be yourself and please ensure to bring your passion for the role and enthusiasm for Barratt across in the video.

We hope to see you in the video interview stage!
