Huge congratulations to Alfie Smith, our Apprentice Bricklayer from Solihull, who has become the first person in the UK to pass the new ‘Level 3 – Craft Bricklaying Apprenticeship’.
Alfie joined our Trade Apprenticeship programme back in 2024—completing 18 months of training in just 12— an incredible achievement made possible by his dedication, curiosity, and the hands-on experience provided on site and at college.
From day one, Alfie demonstrated maturity, a strong work ethic, and a proactive approach to learning. His success is a testament to what’s possible when talent is supported by the right environment and community.
Alfie said, “I am very proud of what I have achieved during my apprenticeship, I would like to thank Mercia division for the opportunity given and all the support from Alan Ferguson over the last 3 years. I am also very proud to be the first Apprentice in the UK with City & Guilds to achieve the new level 3 Apprenticeship and also in obtaining a gold CSCS card.”
Alan Ferguson, Alfie’s mentor and Apprentice Champion, commented: “We are very proud of what Alfie has achieved, and all credit goes to him, he worked hard and grasped the opportunity with both hands and proving he was worth taking the chance on.”
👏 Well done, Alfie—you’ve made history and inspired future apprentices across the country.
